Sludge kills boilers in three ways.
Iron-oxide sludge isn't just inconvenient — it's actively destroying your appliance every winter. Three failure modes I see in Wembley boilers that were never flushed:
1. Heat exchanger blockage (~£600 replacement)
Modern condensing combis have aluminium or stainless heat exchangers with very narrow internal waterways. Sludge accumulates at the bottom, the boiler can't move water fast enough through the exchanger, the metal gets too hot and warps. F22 / F75 / E168 lockouts that won't clear with a top-up.

The diverter valve switches flow between heating and hot water. Sludge gets into the actuator and prevents full travel — symptom is hot water but no heating, or vice versa, or both lukewarm.
